When it comes to designing a bedroom that boasts a sense of luxury, your bed should always be the centerpiece. The secret to creating a stylish look is mastering the art of layering bedding. With the right mix of textures, colors, and high-quality essentials, you can transform your bed into a piece that looks magazine-worthy while also delivering unmatched comfort.
In this guide, we’ll explore how to layer your bedding step-by-step, from choosing the perfect sheets to adding pillows, throws, and textures that enhance the feel of the bedroom overall.
Start with the Foundation
Comfort begins at the very bottom layer of your bed. Even if you invest in bedding that looks good, it won’t feel right without a supportive base. You’ll come to realize that things are not always what they seem, so beds that are visually appealing, may not always feel the best. You are going to want yours to focus on all corners.
- Mattress Topper: A good mattress topper adds plushness and can greatly help regulate temperature. For the best comfort, I recommend looking for memory foam toppers if you really value an asset that can take the shape of your body, or down alternative toppers if you prefer something breathable and soft without retaining too much heat.
- Sheets: When it comes to sheets, look for materials that feel smooth against your skin and last through washes. One of the biggest mistakes I see in people choosing their bedsheet set is that they go for the cheapest option. What I recommend is investing in something that will last long and aid in sleeping throughout the night. This does not always mean expensive.
Build Visual Appeal with Layered Textures
Once your foundation is set, it’s time to play with texture. Layering different fabrics instantly makes your bed look styled with intention.
- Duvet Inserts: If you want your bed to look as though it is apart of a stage room and feel like the beds you would typically find in a hotel, it is time to ditch the comforter and go straight for the duvet inserts. When purchasing, you always size up the duvet with respect to the bed. Here is what that looks like in “bed size > duvet size” format: twin size bed > full size duvet, full size bed > queen size duvet, queen size bed > king size duvet, king size bed > palatial king (oversized king) size duvet. In terms of the duvet cover, I recommend starting with a neutral color as your base. White, cream, or soft gray shades give you flexibility to switch out accessories seasonally.
- Throw Blanket: A decorative throw blanket is where you can introduce different textures like knitted pieces, faux fur, or woven cotton. It is completely up to you where you decide to style yours, but I personally am a fan of placing mine right before the duvet fold on the featured image above.
Style with Pillows for Dimension
Pillows aren’t just for comfort—they’re also one of the easiest ways to change your bed decor.
- Sleeping Pillows: Keep them in crisp pillowcases that match your sheets for a clean base. Or, an alternate idea, if you have a matching quilt set, the pillowcases from that set can match the quilt itself, while the sheets remain a completely separate color as you layer your textures and colors. These HOMELAB 2 Pack King Pillows are a great option that I highly recommend for sleeping if you are looking for comfort on a budget.
- Euro Shams: These oversized pillows placed right before your sleeping pillows create height and structure.
- Throw Pillows: Mix and match sizes, textures, and patterns. Group your throws in odd numbers (like three euros and 2 standards) for a balanced yet visually dynamic look. On my bed, I have 2 sleeping king pillows, 3 euro shams and 2 standard pillows. I use my standard pillows as throws, given that I already have my designated sleeping pillows.
Balance Comfort and Aesthetic
Layering bedding isn’t just about creating a showroom-ready look—it should also support your sleep. Here are a few pro tips:
- Stick with breathable fabrics for sheets and pillowcases to prevent overheating.
- Use textures like linen and cotton in warmer months, then switch to wool material for winter.
- Avoid going overboard with pillows—while they look great, too many can feel impractical.
Making It Yours
The beauty of layering is that it’s versatile. You can change throws and pillow covers seasonally, swap textures to match the weather, and adjust your topper, or sheets for better sleep comfort.
Layering allows your bed to be the perfect balance as a physical comfort piece and a visual showstopper. With the right foundation, textures, and finishing touches, you’ll create a bed that not only looks beautiful but feels indulgent every night.
