When it comes to interior design, there are tons of design choices you can make with specific statement pieces capable of being the staple of an entire room. I personally never cared too much about this before, but I have found that woven baskets are great additions to the aesthetic within just about any contemporary, or farmhouse style home. They are more than just storage assets—they are versatile accent pieces that have the potential to add texture and character to your home. Their purpose can span across multiple areas, but my main go to is styling them as a decorative piece with throw pillows, or blankets being the primary occupants of the basket itself. If you’re looking for some ideas, or starting points in determining which woven pieces could be used to enhance the look of your space, I have put together a list of my top 4 decorative basket picks and how to style them accordingly.

1. Oversized Seagrass Baskets for Living Rooms

Seagrass woven baskets are extremely durable, making them ideal for storing throw blankets, extra pillows, or even firewood. Their natural texture complements both modern and traditional interiors, while their large size ensures functionality without sacrificing good looks. The firewood aspect of storage for seagrass woven baskets is an appearance that would look good in a house, as apartments typically do not have fireplaces that would give the firewood purpose. Even if it was only a decor statement piece.

Styling tip: Placing an oversized seagrass basket next to your sofa, or accent chair for easy access to essential items is recommended if space permits.

2. Lidded Woven Baskets for Hidden Storage

If you want to keep things neat without visual disorganization, lidded woven baskets are a must. Perfect for kids’ toys, pet supplies, or craft items, these baskets keep everyday necessities out of sight while still adding decorative purpose.

Styling tip: Choose baskets with neutral lids to blend properly into minimalist spaces. You may also find that a lot of lids simply match the design of the woven basket itself. They are also great options.

3. Handwoven Rattan Baskets for Entryways

Handwoven baskets bring a bohemian feel to any home. Their lightweight yet sturdy design makes them perfect for holding shoes, umbrellas, or reusable shopping bags in your entryway. Of course, placement is 100% optional, but these types of baskets go best in entryways given their design element and purpose.

Styling tip: Pair this basket type with a mirror to create a welcoming look.

4. Decorative Rope Baskets for Bedrooms

Soft woven rope baskets are ideal for bedrooms because they typically house toys, extra linens, blankets and laundry. They do so quite well without having to compromise the aesthetic of the space they’re in. Their simple design works with almost any style of bedroom, making them a practical choice for both kids’ rooms and adult spaces.

Styling tip: Use a rope basket in neutral tones to complement bedding, or even accent walls for a coordinated design.

Why Woven Baskets Are a Must-Have Décor Piece

Decorative woven baskets are one of the easiest ways to add natural texture, and versatility to your home. They work in every room, adapt to any style, and serve a practical purpose. This list is far from encompassing the entire market of woven baskets, however, these are some pretty good starting points if you intend to spruce up the aesthetic of your home. Looking for more style and not afraid to invest more into the highest quality material you could find? Here are my retail designer recommendations in order ranked from most recommended to least recommended: Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, The Citizenry.
